| Description: | This LEED for Homes-Platinum Certified home is serious in its curb appeal, its high energy performance envelope, and its use of recycled materials. The desire of the owners to live in a home that represented their sense of artistic style was paramount in designing both the exterior and interior spaces. Twelve inch thick interior/exterior concrete walls along with polished concrete floors act as thermal mass to store heat in the winter. Abundant southern glazing provide solar heat gain and daylighting, while careful roof overhang shading keeps things cool during the summer. Three elements prevail on the exterior: concrete, rusting metal, and recycled spruce from local I-80 corridor snow fencing. The interior carries the same rigor: polished concrete, exposed steel, and recycled wood flooring. The thoughtful integration of natural wood, rusting metal, color and sunlight creates surprisingly warm and inviting built spaces.. |
| Methods: | -12” thick insulated concrete walls provide extensive mass for passive solar heating. -99% recycled steel joist floor structure for main and second floor systems. -2 x 6 exterior wall with 2”Icynene and 3.5” blown in cellulose insulation. -Concrete radiant floors in basement, main, and second floors. -Recycled hardwood floors on upper floor. -Passive Solar Design utilizing glazing with appropriate SHGC and thermal mass. -Reclaimed wood siding from local snow fence. -99% recycled steel material for roof flashing, corner details and balcony wrap. -Solar Thermal panels for domestic hot water and space heating via radiant floors. -4.5 kW grid-tied Photovoltaic system to offset energy use. -Interior finishes all low or no VOC content. -Energy Star rating-5 star + -HERS index 28. |
